The rules have changed since the ones done on Sunday night Mahogany Soul.

Slam Rules:

What is a poetry slam?

A poetry slam is an event in which poets perform their work and are judged by members of the audience. Typically the host or other organizer select the judges, who are instructed to give numerical scores (on a zero to ten or one to ten scale) based on the poets content and performance.

Who gets to participate?

The vast series of poetry slams registered by Poetry Slam, Inc. Are open to everyone who wishes to sign up and can get into the venue. Though everyone who signs up has the opportunity to read in the first round, the lineup for subsequent rounds is determined by the judges' scores. In other words, the judges vote for which poets they want to see more work from.

What are the rules?

Though rules vary from slam to slam, the basic rules are:

-Each poem must be of the poets own construction.
- Each poet gets three minutes (plus a ten second grace period) to read one poem, if the poet goes over, points will be deducted from the total score.
-The poet may NOT use props, costumes, or musical instruments.
-Of the scores the poet received from the five judges, the highest and lowest score are dropped and the middle three are added together, giving the poet a total score of 0-30.

Are there any extra rules that pertain directly to BLACK PEARL POETRY SLAMS?

Yes.

The NO REPEAT rule.
No poet may REPEAT a POEM which has been performed in a slam, in another slam during the course of attempting to qualify for NPS (National Poetry Slam) contention. This rule is in effect for all slams with the exception of the NPS Grand slam-off. At that time a poet may use ANY poem he or she has performed in the past.
PUNISHMENT:
If a poet chooses to slam but has no interest in slamming for NPS, that poet may repeat a poem from slam to slam.
If a poet chooses to slam with intentions of trying to go to NPS and repeats a poem from a previous slam in that season, that poet will be disqualified for the season. They may continue to slam, but will not get any points toward NPS consideraton.

Points will be awarded for finishing in the top THREE places. (1st,2nd,3rd)
These points are non-negotiable and non-tranferrable.
If a poet places in the top three in a slam but DOS NOT wish to compete in the Grand Slam, the points for that persons finish are wiped away ad DO NOT trickle down to any other person whom finished beneath them.

BYE WEEK-
Any poet who finishes in the top three in one slam prior to the Grand Slam cannot slam in the slam which follows.
Example- Sally gets 1st place this week. Sally must skip the slam next week. After taking one slam off, Sally is free to slam again. If Sally were to finish in the top three again, this rule would be in effect again. This rule stays in effect up till the actual Grand Slam.

Last Chance Slam-
This will happen in April. One slot for the Grand slam will be reserved and set aside for a "Last Chance" slam. This slam will be a open slam where NONE of the poeple who are going to the grand slam can compete. whoever wins this slam will get a spot in the Grand Slam.

The schedule as it crrently stands for the 2006 National Poetry Slam Black Pearl Poetry season:
January 17
January 31
February 21
February 28
March 21
March 28
April 18-Last Chance Slam
April 25- Grand slam
===============================================

Items of note:
While slamming on a local level requires alot of work, patience, practice, and luck, doing so on the regional and national level is a bit more extreme.
Anyone thinking ofslamming with teh goal of being on a team from this night should look closely at their schedule, finances, and willingness to commit.
Don't get me wrong, it's not Navy Seal training but it does ask something of you.
Anyone making the team will be expected to make themselves available for:
Meetings
Rehersals
Shows/Fundraisers
Slams/Competitions

As it stands, the two mandatory items for the Black Pearl Poetry National Slam team will be- Rust Belt Regional Poetry slam and the National Poetry Slam.

Thank you and good luck.
